Studying Abroad

Springfield, Massachusetts is a wonderful town to grow up in, but sometimes, for students graduating from high school, the educational opportunities they want just aren't here or they need to get out and see the world before they settle down. For those students, studying abroad is more than just attending an English language school in Canada. It's a cultural experience that will shape their lives forever. If you're a Springfield student thinking of studying abroad, consult our checklist to see if you're ready.

Applications and Permits

The first step in the study abroad process is to choose a handful of schools that offer what you're looking for and to submit your applications. Whether you're applying to apprentice in a London auto body shop studying particle physics in India, always check both the school's requirements for international students and the immigration website of the country it's located in to see how to go about applying for a student visa.

Financing

This is the major hurdle for many Springfield students, since international students at universities and colleges often have to pay much higher tuition fees than domestic ones because any government subsidies the school receives won't apply to you. For instance, if you want to study to be an architect in Canada you could end up paying double the domestic tuition fees. Make sure you secure your loans (if you need them) well ahead of time to avoid any snafus that may occur when you arrive.

Tickets and Accommodations

Plane tickets are easy enough to book online, just make sure you leave room in your budget for them. Another thing to remember is that you'll need a place to stay while you're abroad. Students on tight budgets have a number of options: you can stay in a university residence, look for a shared apartment that needs another roommate, or arrange a homestay with a Burlington, Ontario lawyer or other member of the community. Accommodations should be arranged well in advance of your departure, but be careful of sending blind deposits. Keep your eyes peeled for scams and whenever possible get recommendations from your school.

Open Mind

Doing your research on your destination country will help you fit in, but your most important learning experiences will be in-country. Keep an open mind and expose yourself to as many new experiences as possible. If your roommate is looking for a wedding rental in Hamilton, go with him to see how it's done there. If there's an interesting looking club on campus - join! And always remember: when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Don't constantly compare them to home or try to maintain your old life in a new country. Where's the fun in that?
